GEORGE NEWS - Four people have died and 35 informal structures have been destroyed by fires in George this winter, highlighting a concerning trend in the area.
In July alone, two people lost their lives in an informal structure that was razed to the ground.
Two more fatalities were reported over the past weekend after an informal structure burned down in Zone 7, Thembalethu.
According to Debra Sauer, communications officer of George Municipality, emergency services received a call at 23:06 regarding the fire. "The first crew arrived at the scene just six minutes later, but tragically, despite only one structure being involved, two people lost their lives in the blaze," she said.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said the Thembalethu police opened an inquest docket following the death of a woman and a man in the fire. The cause of the fire can't be confirmed at this stage and the deceased are yet to be identified.

In light of these incidents, the Western Cape Provincial Government has issued a public notice with essential fire safety tips for informal settlements:
- Ensure all stoves are placed on stable surfaces to prevent tipping. Keep a bucket of water nearby to douse small fires quickly.
- Place candles in stable holders, away from flammable materials, and cut them short to prevent tipping. Build homes at least 3m apart and keep surroundings clear to slow the spread of fires.
- Keep sand near paraffin appliances, as water can worsen fires; use sand or a fire extinguisher. Ensure good ventilation when cooking on open flames.
- Fully extinguish cigarettes and dispose of them safely. Put out all fires before leaving or sleeping.
- Avoid using open fires in drums indoors, and never leave a brazier or coal fire burning overnight.
- Handle gas appliances carefully, ensuring cylinders are in good condition and leak-free.
- Use a shooter/shifter, not a padlock, for quick emergency exits.
- Be mindful of illegal and faulty electrical connections. Keep roads clear for emergency vehicles and do not obstruct emergency personnel.
