GEORGE NEWS - The 2019 Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge (OCC) in George is going ahead. This was confirmed a short while ago by Alewijn Dippenaar, chairperson of the Disabled Road Race Foundation (DRRF). He told the George Herald the weekend of 21 and 22 September has been set, with the specific day still to be finalised.
The decision was taken this morning at a meeting that was attended by representatives of the DRRF, members of the George Municipal Council, the business community, a representative of the mayor’s office and also Ansie Swart, a previous organiser. Dr Dennis Farrell, chairperson of the George Bussiness Chamber, played a major role and acted as facilitator at the meeting.
The decision comes as a relief after the recent shock announcement by George Municipality that the 2019 OCC had been cancelled because of Acsa’s late withdrawal of their sponsorship.
The OCC, which pioneered by the late Esther Watson, took place for the 16th time last year with more than 1 000 athletes competing, including participants from abroad.
Dippenaar said this year’s race will focus on the competitive aspect, but there will also be a fun part. The race will be smaller than usual, but the plan is to have it in it is extended form again in February next year. The well-known international athlete Ernst van Dyk has indicated that he will compete in September.
At this stage the sponsorships are being finalised and an announcement will be made shortly. The George municipality supports the event.
Farrel welcomed this development.
