GEORGE NEWS - Two people sustained critical injuries while nine others sustained minor to moderate injuries when a taxi and a bakkie collided on Nelson Mandela Boulevard on Tuesday morning, 16 May.
ER24 paramedics and other emergency services arrived on the scene at 08:20 to find the taxi and bakkie in the middle of the road and several people sitting next to the road.
The patients were treated on the scene, while the two seriously injured were transported to George Provincial Hospital for further care.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies said a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened after a Toyota Quantum and a Toyota Hilux bakkie collided at the corner of Nelson Mandela Boulevard and Pienaar streets at about 07:45 on Tuesday 16 May.
According to Spies, preliminary information indicates that the bakkie was transporting 11 employees from Pacaltsdorp when it collided with the taxi travelling towards Thembalethu.
All the injured people came from the bakkie. "The cause of the accident is being investigated," said Spies.
The bakkie and the taxi collided at the traffic light in Nelson Mandela Boulevard near the Conville Police Station.
