GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Being close to the sea as well as the Outeniqua Mountains, that offer a gateway to the Little Karoo, George offers the most beautiful scenic drives. Step on the gas...
Sea and forest
Travel east on the N2 just outside George. Turn off to Victoria Bay to see the pretty little beach that is also the surfing capital of the Garden Route. Back on the N2, turn right and traverse the Kaaimans River Pass in the direction of Wilderness.
The Dolphin's Point lookout offers a spectacular view of the ocean and Wilderness Beach, with the famous historical Kaaimans railway bridge on the western side. Although not in use any more, it conjures up pictures of steam trains chugging across the bridge in days gone by.
In Wilderness you can wander through interesting little shops and art galleries. There are also various restaurants and coffee shops where you can fill up.
From here, take the High Road at the back of Wilderness and travel up the hillside, where you can follow the Map of Africa sign board onto the gravel road to the spectacular lookout point, where the origin of its name will instantly become clear.
It is one of the most breathtaking scenic views in South Africa.
Back at the High Road, turn left and at the T-junction a few kilometres on, you can either turn left onto the Seven Passes road to drive back to George through indigenous forest, or turn right to go and see the Woodville Big Tree, a yellowwood tree that is more than 800 years old.
Take a different route back to George through the small farming community of Hoekwil and experience the stunning view as you descend towards the coastal plain.

Travelling in the Outeniqua Pass guarantees breathtaking scenery. Take the N9 north, which brings you onto the pass. Crossing over the mountain, you will get to the Waboomskraal valley, where there are a number of farm stalls and restaurants where you can stop.
On your way back you can stop at various lookout points on the pass.
Coming down the mountain, keep your eyes peeled for the turn-off to the Montagu Pass and the historic Old Toll House, which is well worth visiting.
