GEORGE NEWS - The Wollie Molly Project of Alzheimer's South Cape is selling hand-made dolls (Wollie Mollies) at R10 each to collect funds to assist people who want to be properly trained as Alzheimer carers at an accredited facility.
The first group of carers was sent for training the week before lockdown, and managed to finish just in time.
"Thank you to all who have contributed towards this project up to now," says Lynn Blignaut of Alzheimer's South Cape. "Without all our volunteers, this wouldn't have been possible."
Funds raised are also used to send out carers to assist families who cannot afford their own carer. This allows the family to enjoy a few hours' break. Diapers are also sponsored for families in need.
"The dolls represent the many 'loose ends' in the brain caused by this debilitating disease. The carer has the responsibility of trying to keep everything together for them and their loved ones," says Theron.
Alzheimer's South Cape thanked the various sponsors. The management of Groenkloof Retirement Village George sponsored the venue, Border2Beach Psycle (sic) Tour contributed towards the training, the individuals who made financial contributions, volunteers who made the Wollie Mollies, everyone who bought a Wollie Molly, the lady in Groenkloof who donated a wheelchair that Alzheimer's South Cape can rent out for funding, the lady from Kraaibosch who sponsored various items for a patient with no income, and the family in Wilderness who sponsored items for a needy patient.
"Businesses or individuals who would like to become involved on a monthly basis, will be welcomed and appreciated. There is a really big need out there," says Theron.
The Alzheimer group also rents out medical equipment to raise funds.
