GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The South African Weather Service has issued a warning that severe thunderstorms are highly likely to occur along the southern coast and the adjacent inland areas from tomorrow, Saturday 4 December, through Monday 6 December.
Scattered to widespread thundershowers are expected over the north and central parts of the Cape Winelands, Southern Namakwaland and Central Karoo on Saturday.
This is expected to extend to the southern and eastern parts of the Central Karoo, Garden Route, Langeberg and Overberg on Sunday and Monday.
Some of the storms could be severe with lightning and gusty winds, leading to rainfall accumulations of 20 to 35mm. Any combinations of hail, strong wind and heavy downpours can occur.
The public should be wary of localised flash flooding on susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges. Large amounts of small hailstones could also be expected and drivers should be wary of slippery conditions that could contribute to motor accidents.
Gusty winds could cause localised damage to settlements and infrastructure and essential services may be temporarily disrupted.
The public can take the following safety precautions during storms:
If possible, stay indoors and away from metal objects. Do not shelter under trees or other tall objects. Do not go fishing or play golf, as both fishing rods and golf clubs are good conductors of electricity.
