GEORGE NEWS - A local Metro EMS paramedic with not only a heart for people, but for animals too, saved the life of a puppy in Thembalethu on Tuesday evening, 14 February.
According to the Valentine's Day hero, Letazha Leeuwner, she and a colleague were on their way to a call-out in Thembalethu when she saw a bakkie run over the little dog.
The driver of the bakkie stopped as soon as he could and was very relieved when Leeuwner told him she would take care of the puppy.
"I immediately jumped out of our vehicle and ran to the dog. Some people were standing around and tried to sweep the dog out of their way using their feet. The poor dog couldn't even get up to walk and they were trying to kick it. I picked her up and out of fear and shock she tried to bite me.
"However, she quickly realised that I was friendly and not going to hurt her. I tried to make her as comfortable as possible and phoned the SPCA after we took care of our patient," Leeuwner said.
What impressed Leeuwner was the quick response she received from senior SPCA inspector, Salomé Bruyns. "She was very quick to help the dog and I want to thank her from the bottom of my heart for her urgency, time, love and care for animals," she said.
The little patient is currently being treated at the Garden Route SPCA's clinic in George. She will hopefully make a full recovery.
The puppy was made as comfortable as possible.
