GEORGE NEWS - The November programme for the University of the Third Age (U3A) meetings promises an interesting variety.
On Wednesday 10 November, Armchair Travel will be presented by Macky Rixom, who will be talking about her "Trek to Everest Base Camp", which she won as a prize in May 1996.
his trek was to support the South African mountaineering team in its attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest. She will illustrate this trip with her own photography. The lecture will start at 10:30.
Digi Club will meet on Monday 15 November at 14:00 and the topic will be "Tree Knots".
At the Friday Lecture on 19 November, Jackie Haupt will talk about "An Oudtshoorn Hero". As it is close to Remembrance Day, it seems appropriate to remember Alban Williams, a young man from Oudtshoorn who in WW1 was awarded the Military Medal for bravery.
Haupt will talk about details of some of the battles Williams fought in, relate some extracts from diaries and show photographs Williams took of cemeteries and memorials in France and Belgium. There will be tea at 10:00 and the lecture will start at 10:30
The general meeting on Wednesday 24 November will be the annual U3A picnic at the Moths hall and the theme will be "Military Manoeuvres", starting at 10:30 am. The details of this meeting will be given nearer the time.
The last meeting of the U3A year will be International Affairs presented by Case Rijsdijk on Monday 29 November at 14:00.
U3A will close for the month of December and readers are wished a happy and peaceful festive season. Activities and talks will re-start from 17 January 2022.
Meetings are held at the Moth Outeniqua Shellhole in Rijk Tulbach Street. All attendees are requested to wear face masks and sanitise their hands before entering the hall.
