GEORGE NEWS - George resident Shandre Marais had to pinch herself when she heard that she was one of the 31 recipients of a bursary to study at Boston City Campus that were handed out as part of reigning Miss South Africa Natasha Joubert’s educational advocacy campaign, the Natasha Joubert Collective.
Joubert launched a partnership last year with her alma mater, Boston City Campus, to award 31 academic scholarships to study at Boston City Campus for distance e-learning studies towards a full-time undergraduate qualification.
The Study Buddy Fund partnered with the Miss South Africa Organisation to also fund year-long studies at Boston City Campus.
Marais (37) is currently an assistant operations manager at a courier company and also a part-time photographer, but soon will also be using her bursary to study web and graphic design.
George Herald spoke to Marais and this is what she had to say:
What does getting this scholarship mean to you?
It means I will be able to follow my dreams and have a qualification to my name. I will be able to better myself and in doing so, do more for my children. I can be a role model for them and make them proud.
Why do you want to study the course you've applied for?
I have always wanted to learn software, be creative and create visual concepts, art and projecting ideas and experiences and do my own advertising and marketing design. I have enrolled for this course to help me with my photography career so I can build up and learn web design and focus on myself to be better and more experienced.
What high school did you attend and what did you study?
I went to the former PW Botha College (now Eden Technical High School) and matriculated in 2004 with biology, typing, home economics, Afrikaans, English and business economics.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself owning a very successful graphic design firm, and a blossoming photography business.
Anything else you want to add?
I'd like to thank the Natasha Joubert Collective for the opportunity, as well as the honour of being part of the first-ever group to receive this sponsorship. And a big thank you to Miss South Africa for choosing me to be a part of it all. Being part of the class of 2024 makes me feel incredibly honoured and blessed. Thank you. Dream it and believe it! I am so blessed.
