GEORGE NEWS - The installation of fibre optics in Thembalethu to increase internet connectivity in the area was in the spotlight at a meeting at the Swanepoel Hall in Thembalethu last week after fiber construction in Zone 9 ground to a halt due to workers' grievances.
The meeting was called to establish a Project Steering Committee (PSC) and to air workers' and contractors' grievances.
Kholekile Mwahla of Cape Town- based construction company, Igugu Holdings, assured those in attendance that Igugu will support workers and resolve all issues.
Following the productive meeting, workers agreed to return to work and Phase 1 of the fibre optics installation was resumed.
Mandilakhe Zinto was elected as chairperson of the newly formed PSC tasked with addressing and airing issues regarding local projects in Thembalethu.
Grievances included that salaries are paid on a monthly basis whereas workers prefer to be paid weekly. The fact that companies from outside of George get tenders in Thembalethu, is also a source of unhappiness.
A follow-up meeting between Igugu and the PSC was set to take place on Tuesday 6 November to map out the way forward.
