GEORGE NEWS - In support of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence (GBV), a local organising committee against GBV recently started with awareness campaigns throughout the area.
The committee, that consists of role players from the George Community Police Forum, Conville and Thembalethu police stations, the national prosecuting authority, Thuthuzela, George Municipality, the disability unit, the Department of Social Development, Famsa and Phambili, has also been conducting a survey to determine where and what type of needs arise in various communities.
This aims to assist in improving services to victims of GBV and in the long run to reduce incidents of GBV in the area.
According to Angelique Vezasie, site coordinator at George Thuthuzela Care Centre, a GBV Forum for George will be established after the programme that is currently running.
"The forum will focus on developing further programmes for the communities of George for awareness, prevention and services to victims of GBV," she said.
The programme for the remainder of the 16 Days of Activism is as follows:
Thursday 3 December they will be on the corner of Sierrissie and Protea streets from 09:00 tomorrow morning. They will be in Syferfontein from 10:00.
On Friday you will find them at the Rosedale community hall, also from 10:00 and on Monday they will be at Spar in Denneoord.
On Tuesday 8 December they will be at Thembalethu Square from 10:00 onwards and next Wednesday they will be creating awareness in Nelson Mandela Boulevard from 09:00.
They will end off their awareness campaign on Thursday 10 December with a closing programme at Truns in Thembalethu from 10:00.
