GEORGE NEWS - The illegal drug trade received a heavy blow when drugs with an estimated street value of R570 000 were confiscated at a house in Zone 5 in Thembalethu on Thursday 24 December.
This clampdown formed part of the Western Cape police’s Safer Festive Season operations.
Members of the Public Order Police, Crime Intelligence, Provincial Detectives (Narcotics Section) and the Eden Cluster Crime Combatting Team descended on the drug outlet. A search of the premises ensued where large plastic containers with dagga stashed inside were found. The police confiscated 71 kg of dagga packed in 1kg vacuum packs and 10 kg parcels ready for delivery or collection.
A man (48) was arrested on charges of dealing in drugs. The suspect is still in custody and he will appear in the Thembalethu Magistrates’ court on Monday, 28 December.
Bullets on a bedside table
Ammunition was confiscated at a house in Courtney Street on Thursday 24 December at about 21:30.
Vigilant members attached to the George Crime Prevention unit responded swiftly to information regarding illegal activities at the residence. An operation was conducted at the house and upon searching the premises they found 9mm rounds of ammunition on a bedside table in the bedroom. A further search resulted in the discovery of more 9mm rounds, bringing it to a total of 90 9mm rounds. In addition eight shotgun rounds were found, as well as two .22 rounds that were hidden under a blanket on the bed.
A woman (45) was arrested on charges of possession of ammunition.
Liquor abuse and violence
Furthermore, efforts directed at liquor abuse and gender-based violence during the festive period led to the arrest of three suspects on charges of dealing in liquor without a licence. Illegal shebeens were closed down during various safer festive season operations in the Garden Route District on Thursday 24 December.
Members attached to the Calitzdorp police conducted an operation at Royal Heights where they confiscated 240 litres of liquor. A 22-year-old suspect was arrested.
Similar operations were also conducted at Conville in George where two suspects, aged 34, were arrested following successful operations at illegal shebeens at Truter Street and McGregor Street respectively. The police confiscated liquor at both premises and arrested the suspects on charges of selling liquor without a licence.
All these suspects will appear in court when charged.
The management of the SAPS in the Western Cape has applauded the commitment of the police officials who even during these trying times continued with efforts to make communities safer.
