GEORGE NEWS - Police divers continued their search yesterday for a male university student (18) who went missing in the surf at Wilderness.
This follows an incident on Friday 10 March when a female student at Nelson Mandela University George Campus, Nkgolobi Molapo (21) from Gauteng, was brought to shore from behind the backline of the waves in front of Views Hotel by NSRI rescue swimmers.
It is believed that the young man went after her to try and help her when she got into trouble in the water.
Preliminary investigation indicates that both were part of a group that went swimming at Wilderness. She was transported to hospital by Frontier Medix ambulance in a critical condition and doctors and nurses fought for hours to save her life.
Despite all efforts she sadly passed away during the night.
Since then the search for the male, believed to be 18 years old, continued.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said yesterday, Wednesday 15 March, that police divers are searching on the coast between Kleinkrantz and Wilderness.
The George police opened an inquest docket after the death Molapo. Her body has been identified by a family member.
According to communications and marketing manager of NMU George Campus, Milisa Piko, the university was shocked and saddened by the tragic incident.
"The university, particularly the George Campus community, extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased student," she said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are also with the family and friends of the missing student. Counselling and psychosocial support has been arranged for the affected students, and the university is working with the relevant authorities in the search for the missing student."
