GEORGE NEWS - A five-month-old George baby facing mounting medical bills will be at the heart of a 40km Heritage Day fundraising challenge from George to Hartenbos on 24 September.
George resident Valmeire Harding, who is awaiting a knee replacement, will make the journey in a wheelchair pushed by community volunteers, while George Council speaker Sean Snyman, who lives with a physical disability, will run alongside her.
The journey starts at Unity Park at 06:00 and passes through Blanco, Redberry Farm, George Airport and Great Brak River.
Baby Lihan Loots was born on 11 May and has endured severe abdominal pain, vomiting, reflux and feeding difficulties.
Although surgery successfully corrected pyloric stenosis, specialists are still investigating silent reflux, possible respiratory complications and visceral hyperalgesia.
His family has already spent more than R116 000 on tests, procedures and specialist treatment, with monthly costs of about R6 000 for specialised milk and R4 300 for medication.
Harding and Snyman are appealing for donations and volunteers to help push the wheelchair in stages.
Funds raised will go towards Lihan's ongoing medical treatment, specialised nutrition and diagnostic testing.
