In wheelchair from George to Hartenbos for a sick baby

GEORGE NEWS - George resident Valmeire Harding and Sean Snyman, the Local Council Speaker, will undertake a 40km journey from George to Hartenbos on Heritage Day, 24 September, to raise funds for five-month-old Lihan Loots.

Harding, who is awaiting a knee replacement, will complete the route in a wheelchair pushed by volunteers. Snyman, who also lives with a physical disability, will run alongside her.

The route starts at 06:00 at Unity Park and passes through Blanco, Redberry Farm, George Airport and Groot-Brakrivier on the way to Hartenbos.

Lihan was born on 11 May and quickly exhibited severe health distress, including stomach pain, cramping and vomiting. Doctors initially suspected lactose intolerance and tried numerous specialised formulas, such as Alula Gold Comfort and Novalac Aminova.

While Lihan underwent successful surgery to correct pyloric stenosis (a narrowed stomach outlet), his medical struggles persist. He continues to experience severe reflux, feeding difficulties and constant abdominal pain.

Specialists are currently investigating silent reflux, potential respiratory complications from aspiration and visceral hyperalgesia, which causes highly sensitive digestive nerves. Lihan requires neurological medication alongside standard pain syrups to manage his symptoms.

The financial toll on the Loots family has already exceeded R116 000 due to extensive diagnostic tests, endoscopies, surgeries and specialist consultations in Cape Town. They face ongoing monthly commitments of approximately R6 000 for specialised milk and R4 300 for medications.

Harding, Snyman and the Loots family are appealing to businesses and community members for financial backing.

“We would also need a few volunteers to take turns to push the wheelchair and asking members of the community who would like to get involved, to come forward,” said Harding.

All donations go directly toward Lihan’s diagnostic testing, specialised nutrition and escalating medical treatments to help him eventually live pain-free.
