GEORGE NEWS - Children as young as 10 years old are among those who have attempted suicide on the Garden Route, and data from the past three years show a worrying increase in suicide attempts among children and teenagers.
According to the Western Cape Department of Health, 73 clients under the age of 18 were seen for suicide attempts in 2025. During the same period, 336 clients aged 18 and older were treated following suicide attempts.
These figures come as concern grows about the pressure young people face during the matric exams, when academic stress, limited support and difficult socio-economic circumstances can increase vulnerability.
While the number of attempts among young people is a growing concern, the department's data shows that the highest number of suicides occurs among middle-aged men.
The department is urging people who are struggling to seek help. Trained counsellors are available at clinics, while the department also has two clinical psychologists.
Additional support is available through the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) and LifeLine.
