GEORGE NEWS - The Transport Month campaign is an annual feature on the calendar of the Department of Transport and is one of the ways in which the department engages directly with its stakeholders.
Transport Month is celebrated to increase awareness among South Africans on road safety and public transport.
As part of Transport Month, public transport operations have been held throughout George and will continue for the duration of the month.
On Thursday 14 October, a combined force of 15 provincial traffic members, 11 municipal traffic members and approximately 30 local police members descended on the CBD as part of public transport operations.
Less than an our after operations commenced at four different locations in town, 16 minibus taxis had been impounded for various contraventions and a total of 35 fines, to the value of R64 500, had been issued. Thirteen of the vehicles were impounded as the drivers were operating without a permit or operating license.
One driver was arrested for drinking and driving at the taxi rank in town and one was taken into custody for reckless and/or negligent driving, as well as evading arrest. Two more were arrested on outstanding warrants.
More similar operations can be expected throughout October.
