GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEOS - This morning the feeling at Thembalethu Square was one of hope, with the launch of a support programme for men, called Ubuhlati be-Themba Lobomi, or directly translated: the “kraal” of Ithemba Lobomi.
The NGO Ithemba Lobomi saw a need to provide support to men who feel they have no one to talk to when it comes to matters of the heart.
The aim is to prevent gender based violence, suicides and murder and fatherless homes, by creating a “kraal”, or support group, where men can talk about their feelings.
The programme is supported by the Western Cape Department of Health, who had representatives at the function earlier today. Members of the police where also present, as well as all 87 staff members of Ithemba Lobomi.
“We say, let’s talk about these problems and learn more from each other. Shared problems can be solved,” said Siphendulwe Vela, a social worker at Ithemba Lobomi, and one of the coordinators of this new programme.

“Men boil everything inside [themselves]. We say, come and share that what is eating you. Killing, abuses and unhappy homes comes from not being able to share what is inside you.” Wellness support coordinator Siboniso Mabaso said: “Don’t kill yourself from the inside. We need to break the silence. Men have to cry, if they have to cry.”

A men’s support group is a typical group of men that meets on a regular basis to share what is happening in their lives and receive guidance on how to best navigate their situations. It also aims to help them better their lives through experience of personal growth, mental health, success and happiness.
Group sessions will be held twice a month at the NGO’s premises, green and white containers next to the old clinic, opposite Thembalethu Library, 2211 Ngcakani Street.
“We men struggle with emotional intelligence,” said Vela. “You have to sit back and analyse a situation. The outcome may be very different then, if you control your emotions.”
