GEORGE NEWS - The world of books is opening up for the children of Nature's Valley, the informal settlement in Kleinkrantz, where a container library recently opened.
It was made possible by the Kleinkrantz Community Circle and a number of volunteers who transformed an old shipping container.
A Wilderness volunteer, who wants to remain anonymous, said the aim is to provide especially the children of the settlement with books and to help develop interest in reading and a reading culture.
The idea for a library was initiated by the Wilderness volunteer and Georgian Pauline Lourens, while Kleinkrantz residents Brian Mushfieldt and Anthony Innes, the local ward committee member for Nature's Valley, steered the project.
Mushfieldt said two young volunteers, Tamira Roman and Estelle Miggels, are manning the library under adult supervision. "Sue-Ellen Innes holds story book reading sessions with the smaller children twice a week for now," she added.

Books were donated through mediation of Lourens who sourced books from donors such as the George Library and Wolfgang Schrader of Blue Forest Books. A number of Kleinkrantz residents also donated books.
Another recent add-on for the children is a playground built by the community of Nature's Valley where the young ones are having hours of fun.

The shelves of the library are well-stocked, but new reading material, especially Afrikaans children's books, is always welcome. Donors can deposit books at the George Library in a box marked "Kleinkrantz Community Library".
