GEORGE NEWS - Every year, George Municipality grants funding to purchase goods for municipal crèches as part of the government's responsibility for early childhood development. In a press statement Debra Sauer, a communications officer at the municipality, says that supplies were donated to 28 municipal crèches last week Wednesday at the George Civic Centre banquet hall.
The crèches that have benefited are Golden Valley, Illingelethu, Isiseko, Kekkel en Kraai, Kleinkrantz, Klouter Kabouter, Kwakhanya, Lawaaikamp, Lubabalo, Masibambane, Masizakhe, Mina Moo, Mzomhle, Nompumelelo, Nonzame, Pophuis, Rooibootjie, Rosedale Educare, Rosedale Nursery, Sandanezwe, Siembamba, Siyazama, Sonneblomland, Sonneblom (Touwsranten), Zamuxolo, Chris Nissen, Nikiwe and Diepkloof crèches.
The necessities comprised educational toys, mattresses, plastic trays, mugs and cutlery, blankets and puzzles. "Often these crèches are not in a position to purchase the supplies themselves," says Sauer. "They are located in very poor areas where unemployment is high, and greatly appreciate the gesture. The municipality gives them an extra boost by donating these goods."
Sean Snyman, portfolio councillor for community development, thanked members of the community that are a vital part of the development of the future leaders and role models of our country. "Crèches are fundamentally the institutions which foster the love for learning and create the foundation for the success or failure of our children," he said.
Sonneblom Crèche from Touwsranten entertained the crowd with song and dance. Here they are with some of the toys they received.
He applauded the early learning development educators who lay the foundation for children and take time to improve their lives.
"Although you are the ones that lay the first building blocks, secondary teachers and professors get the credit when the child excels, when in fact it should be your efforts that are recognised for having completed the most difficult part of the education."
He thanked the teachers for their patience and commitment to the children.
