GEORGE NEWS - Over the weekend the Eden Cluster Crime Combatting Team was deployed in crime-ridden areas in George where they embarked on various operations and confiscated drugs as well as illegal liquor.
The focused operations included blue light patrols, random vehicle checkpoints, stop and search and visits to drug and liquor outlets.
On Saturday afternoon, 28 August, at approximately 17:50, the team reacted on a tip-off from the public regarding illegal activity at a house in Borcherds.
"On their arrival a man attempted to flee, but the vigilant members swiftly caught up with him. A search of the premises resulted in the confiscation of 14 bankies of tik and 20 Mandrax tablets," said Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie. The 35-year-old man was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs.
On Friday evening, 27 August, at approximately 19:05 the team responded to another tip-off about illegal activities at a house at Kapokblom Street, Le Vallia, where they confiscated a large quantity of liquor. R160k of drugs land men in hot water
Two suspects were arrested by members of the rural flying squad on Friday after drugs with a street value of approximately R160 000 were found in their possession. The suspects, aged 33 and 35, both from Thembalethu, were scheduled to appear in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate's Court on Monday 30 August, but by the time of going to print no further details had been received about their court appearance.
Their arrests come after police patrolling the N12 spotted a suspicious looking Mercedes-Benz en route to Oudtshoorn at approximately 18:20.
"The occupants acted suspiciously when they threw parcels out of the moving vehicle," said Pojie. "The vigilant members pursued the vehicle and stopped it just outside Oudtshoorn. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a consignment of tik and Mandrax tablets and it was later established that the parcels which were dropped along the road also contained Mandrax tablets."

The police seized the vehicle and confiscated 1 579 Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R125 000, as well as 92 grams of tik valued at more than R35 000.
"The strategic deployment of flying squad members on Western Cape roads yielded excellent results with the confiscation of over R5-million's drugs during the past month alone," said Pojie.
