GEOGE NEWS - Two men appeared at the George Magistrate's Court on Monday 13 November after allegedly stabbing to death another man in Thembalethu during a circumcision ceremony.
It is alleged that an argument broke out between Athenkosi Khwakwini and Chumani Hanabe against Zethu Nqandela on Sunday 11 November in Zone 9 at Bomvana Street, where a Xhosa circumcision ceremony was taking place.
According to Thembalethu police spokesperson Capt Dumile Gwavu, the three were among a group of men arguing about manhood.
"When the fight broke out, Zethu Nqandela was stabbed and hacked on his upper body. He died on the scene and the suspects were arrested a few hours after the incident. One side of a scissor, and a knife were found at the scene," said Gwavu. The case was postponed to 20 November for bail application and the suspects will remain in custody.
On 28 August, a 30-year-old Thembalethu man was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the George Regional Court for stabbing another man to death during a manhood argument.
According to Gwavu, the argument started when the accused, Songezo Ntetshana, called the victim, Thembisile Vetezo, who had not been circumcised, "ikwekwe" (boy).
"The two started fighting and Ntetshana strangled and stabbed Vetezo on his upper body," said Gwavu. "The deceased sustained an open wound to his chest and he died at the scene."
Five years of the 15-year sentence were suspended for a five-year period on condition that the accused is not convicted of murder in this period.
