GEORGE NEWS - Two local animal welfare organisations, Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need (Odin) and Cat Assistance Team (Cat) Garden Route, were amongst the lucky winners in the recent Bravecto Feed the Furry Nation competition. Bravecto is a product used for the treatment and prevention of flea and tick infestations in pets.
Cat Garden Route, Odin, New Beginnings in Bloemfontein and Soweto Animal Rescue & Advisory Centre each received R4 000.
According to Coriza Vermeulen of Cat Garden Route, they will most definitely be using the money for sterilisations. "It's all about sterilisations. We will use that money to sterilise as many cats as possible to prevent unwanted kittens being born," she said.
Odin's Colleen Smith said they used the money to buy more Bravecto. "We purchase about R15 000 worth of Bravecto each month. Every single dog we rescue gets treated with Bravecto, so this really helped us. We can never have enough Bravecto," she said.
In a press release this week Dr Carolyn Chelchinskey, business unit manager of MSD Animal Health, of which Bravecto is a product, said that they created the Feed the Furry Nation campaign as a way for their loyal Bravecto users to support welfare organisations.
"This was planned before the emergence of Covid-19, but the campaign became even more important during lockdown, when welfare organisations lost most of their funding and demand increased. It was heartwarming for the Bravecto brand to be able to help in this desperate time, and we would like to thank the vets, veterinary support staff and pet owners that supported this campaign and helped us make it a success," read the press release.
The competition, which ran from 1 February until 15 May, consisted of several generous elements. The first saw a percentage of all Bravecto sales donated in food to eight shelters across South Africa, totalling more than half-a-million rand's worth of food, weighing about 23 068kg.
The second part of the contest gave loyal Bravecto customers the chance to win by filling in an entry form at their vet outlet or enter online and submitting a photo of their invoice.
