GEORGE NEWS - The Bread of Life soup kitchen, started by Parkdene High head boy Gustaviano Appels during the Covid-19 lockdown last year, is celebrating its first birthday with a three-day programme for kids and high school learners.
The team of Bread of Life is also excited to celebrate the official launch of a brand-new building that serves as Bread of Life's kitchen. It was donated by Soul Food and Arms of Care.
The team is planning a braai day for the kids as well as a camping programme for high school learners as part of the celebrations from 10 to 12 December.
"We cannot celebrate our first birthday without the help and support of the public. Anything that people can donate to help boost the soup kitchen will be much appreciated by the team. Feeding the many hungry tummies will help bring about positive change in our community," said Appels.

Appels was recently awarded as the runner-up in the National Teachers' Awards in the category National Learner. It is granted to learners with leadership qualities who make a difference in their communities.
Appels started the soup kitchen during lockdown last year when many parents lost their jobs and the need in the Parkdene community deepened. He also dug graves for an income during that time to help provide for his own family.
