GEORGE NEWS - The latest update on the water situation in Wilderness from the George Municipality:
Status of water supply
Wilderness Heights NO WATER – Water trucks stationed from 06:00–09:00 daily at three points (Serviced by Lieberstraum Reservoir).
Waterside Road – Water truck stationed near Wilderness Hotel (Serviced by Boardwalk Reservoir)
All other areas will be experiencing low water pressure.
Intermittent supply
The water supply to the eastern areas was reduced during last night in an attempt to provide more water to the western areas. This was successfully completed with Ebb and Flow Reservoir filled to capacity overnight and water supply to eastern areas resumed this morning.
The Water Works in Wilderness has a fixed capacity and is augmented by the supply of water from George along the railway bridge. With the George supply not in working presently until the repair is completed, water trucks were being used to maintain the levels of the affected reservoirs.
Weather conditions on Wednesday and Thursday affected the access roads to certain reservoirs and it is hoped that today (Friday 11 October) the water trucks can resume filling reservoirs.
Interim water supply
The interim water supply measures of four (4) water trucks remains in place and water is available for collection by consumers daily from 6 – 9pm - Wilderness Heights shop, Cnr of Silver/Whites Rd, Remskoen Rd and near Wilderness Hotel.
Please bring your own containers and note that these water trucks do need to refill at times so if they are not seen, they will return.
Update on repair planning and safety considerations
The timeline for this repair project remains at 10 days ( 10 – 19 October 2019) due to the safety precautions that need to be adhered to, the specialist skills required, as well as the necessity to only work during daylight hours, again for safety reasons. Path clearing and other preparations are taking place today.
Safe storage of water
Storing water in open containers please ensure that it is kept in a cold location or fridge. Use an open container within 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator, 1 to 2 days in a cold room, or a few hours in a warm room. After that, purify the remaining water again by boiling it. It is safer to store water in closed containers.
George Municipality apologizes for the inconvenience and assures the public that the repair efforts are being expedited as quickly as is possible given the difficult location of the failure and all safety concerns having to be addressed.
During work hours please contact 044 801 9262/66 or 044 8016300 a/h for enquiries.
Updates on the situation will be given to the public via the media and social media channels of George Municipality on a daily basis.
