GEORGE NEWS - Seven months after Garden Route SPCA Senior Inspector, Salome Bruyns, laid cruelty charges under the Animals Protection Act against a dog owner, justice has finally been served twofold.
During an outreach in August 2017 in the Uniondale area, Bruyns came across a severely emaciated wirehair terrier female with two puppies.
The pitiable dog was shackled on a short chain. Bruyns said that she was so weak that she could hardly walk and would collapse if she stood up for too long.
After two weeks in the SPCA's care the valiant little mother, who had taken care of her puppies as best as she could, despite her terrible circumstances, began to walk normally.
She improved daily and was adopted by a delightful family who adore her.
Seyrolene Miggels, who was in custody / charge of the little dog when it was found, was originally the only accused. She blamed the situation on her brother, Anton Human, who had left the dog with her.
This is what the wirehair looked like when she was found by Garden Route senior inspector Salome Bruyns.
The court decided to prosecute both parties as, according to the law, you are responsible for an animal whether you are in possession, charge, custody or control of that animal.
Both parties admitted guilt and each paid a fine of R300.
Although the fine is not immense, the SPCA is content that both parties now have a criminal record.
