GEORGE NEWS - This coming Saturday, 24 February, George will host its 20th Outeniqua Chair Challenge (OCC), with an extensive course blocked off for racing on the 42.2km route, part of which is used for the 21.1km and 10km races.
There is also a fun 5km course for competitors in wheelchairs pushed by helpers. George residents are now being called upon to help OCC organisers make the event roll in every sense of the word.
Volunteers are invited to help marshalling the routes, including the marathon and half-marathon tracks.
Alternatively, please sign up to push one of the many contestants in the 5km fun race – it really is the best fun ever! Contact Charlene Theron on 084 314 4323.
“At 6 o'clock on Friday evening, as is the norm, we host the official opening ceremony for participants, and by Saturday morning the first riders start off at 7 o'clock – nice and early on that late summer’s morning,” says organiser Alewijn Dippenaar.
The public is encouraged to line the routes to show participants their support - always a great motivating factor for the athletes.
Once all competitive and fun races have been completed, an award ceremony concludes procedures at lunchtime on Saturday – and everyone is invited - lots of food stalls will be at hand.
The 2024 Route for visitors to OCC
Martelize Brink, popular RSG radio presenter, food-and-wine aficionado, and all-round inspirational livewire, is once again participating in the 10km chair race, an item that she won last year! Since losing the use of her legs practically overnight as a teenager, she has been adamant that this so-called disability will not stand in her way. Read more about her philosophy, “Be hardegat in a diplomatic way” tomorrow online.
The premier sponsor of this year’s OCC is again George Municipality joined by Lancewood, Safari, the Premier’s Office, Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs & Sport, Eden Sports Council and Algoa FM.
