GEORGE NEWS - The George Junior City Council (JCC) for 2019 was announced at the year-end function of the 2018 Junior City Council on Monday 15 October.
Outgoing Junior Mayor Lené Conradie thanked her fellow councillors, highlighting the many successful projects undertaken by the JCC.
Conradie said her fellow councillors taught her this year that every contact with the community must be a positive one; if not, the responsibility is with yourself to effect the mind shift to turn the situation around. "We spent many hours planning the events, but what is more important is that we made a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than us," she said.
George Mayor Melvin Naik congratulated the JCC for taking a leadership role amongst the youth and thanked Cllr Liza Stroebel for her nurturing role in reviving the JCC. Naik said that the JCC must become more structured and a 'Code of Conduct' should be adopted, as having everyone on the same page will ensure that the aims and ideals of the organisation will be easier to achieve.
Freddie Trout of People against Substance Abuse (Pasa) thanked the JCC for their help in boosting the Tekkie Tax sales. "Tekkie Tax is one of our biggest fund raisers and this year with your help it will be our best year ever."
Fagan Solomons of Kretzenshoop Primary School in Blanco thanked the JCC for focusing on the school.
"The feedback from the learners is that the JCC interaction has made a difference to their lives as they realise that they can also achieve success by serving others."
The incoming Junior City Council are: mayor Nicholas Cato (York High), deputy mayor Nikita Labuschagne (Outeniqua High), municipal manager Ehsanul-lee Booysen (George High), speaker Justin Yawe (York High) and treasurer Nina van Zyl (York High).
