GEORGE NEWS - The University of the Third Age (U3A) has an interesting programme of talks and events for September.
All talks are at Emmaüs in Memoriam Street and visitors are always welcome.
On the First Day of Spring, Friday 1 September, the final module of the art appreciation course will be given by Dr Brendan Cole.
This talk will be on 'Neoclassicism and beyond' and will conclude with a discussion of the enduring legacy of classical art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The meeting will start at 10:30.
On Monday 11 September, the Digiclub will have their meeting on 'Water Patterns'.
On Wednesday 13 September in Armchair Travel, Roza Barnes will take the audience on her travels through Colorado in the USA. The meeting starts at 10:30.
Discussions on international affairs will be a week earlier this month on Monday 18 September starting at 14:00.
On Friday 22 September, Walter Waldeck will talk about the 'Story behind the Helderberg crash that happened in 1987'. The SAA Boeing Helderberg crashed on its return journey from Taiwan to Johannesburg, killing all 159 people on board.
There have been various conspiracy theories about this accident. Waldeck is a former SAA pilot and the Helderberg was the first aircraft that he flew for SAA.
Two weeks later he was in Mauritius when the plane crashed. This talk should be extremely interesting and one not to be missed. Refreshments will be served before the meeting which starts at 10:30.
At the monthly meeting on Wednesday 27 September, in the series 'Treasures in your home', various members of U3A will be talking about their ‘treasures’. This series of talks has proved to be very interesting and the public is invited to come along and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee beforehand. The meeting starts at 10:30.
