GEORGE NEWS - A dumpsite that was turned into a play park for children in December 2015 in Zone 9, Thembalethu, has deteriorated to its former state, threatening the health of residents.
Almost three years ago, George Herald sister publication Idinga reported that the George Municipality started a tree planting and beautification pilot project to eradicate unlawful dumping and make George residential areas safe and clean.
The project was started in August 2015, when the municipality identified certain spots in communities where illegal dumping took place.
One of the illegal dumpsites that was transformed is in Erasteni, Zone 9.
This place was turned into a beautiful park, but the residents of the area have again turned it into an ugly site, with no sign that the area had ever been beautified.
The George mayor at the time, Charles Standers, said one of the growing challenges that George was facing is the growth of illegal dumping.
Another illegal dumping site in Thembalethu along the Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
He said it is important that we instil pride, co-responsibility and ownership among citizens in all areas.
Three years down the line the problem still persists.
A media inquiry was sent to the George Municipality asking if and how they plan to address the matter of illegal dumpsites in Thembalethu.
The George Herald is awaiting their reply.
