GEORGE NEWS - Both the Gwaiing Road upgrade and Metro Grounds housing project received a visit from the Provincial Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers earlier this week. Simmers was joined by Mayor Leon van Wyk on Monday 15 May during his walkabouts on both terrains.
Both the Gwaiing road upgrade and the Metro Ground housing project are expected to be completed by June 2024.
Gwaiing Road
The minister's first stop was at the DR1618 Gwaiing road - a project that entails the upgrade of a 4,4km gravel road to a tarred surface, with an envisaged cost of just over R67m. The work includes the upgrade of the storm water network and the installation of 27 new storm water pipe crossings. Construction started in December last year.
A total of 44 Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers have been appointed.
Simmers said once completed the project will be a strategic carriageway that will allow for the transportation of goods and services.

Metro Grounds
The first houses of the Metro Grounds housing project will be handed over by the end of this month. Upon completion, the site will consist of 436 housing opportunities, fitted with solar geysers to help beneficiaries become more energy resilient. The total cost of the project is R126,9m.
Four of the 10 subcontractors on site are women-owned companies. Fiela Wonderlik, owner of Wonilla Construction, said her team has built 33 houses in the first phase of the project.
Simmers said it is expected that many of the contractors will have their Construction Industry Development Board ratings improved upon completion of the project.
"Contractors and those who are employed at our projects will leave at the end of the contract with more than just a pay cheque. True empowerment means an improvement of skills for our citizens."
