Education today is also not restricted to the classroom. It extends from the classroom into the community and across the country. We take pride in the education structures in George as our schools are recognised nationwide for their academic and sports achievements," said Councillor Iona Kritzinger at the recent Hundred Days to the Glenwood Karoo Challenge (GKC) celebrations, which takes place on 22 September.
The GKC is an annual event for Grade 10 learners at Glenwood House School and the pride of its traditions. It involves a 550km journey through the Karoo over 17 days cycling, hiking and paddling - an important milestone in the development of juveniles that speaks to:
- Commitment, preparation and adventure
- Physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual challenges - redefining the boundaries
- Exploring, independence and environmental awareness
- Not being connected to technology or consumption
- Social responsibility, giving to and sharing with others
The entire school is involved in the GKC. Every child who has not yet experienced the trip forms part of a group that has adopted a participant. It is the duty of each group to keep their participant motivated. It is also the duty of each participant to keep their group updated and informed about this once in a lifetime experience.
The Hundred Days to the Glenwood Karoo Challenge celebration was a suitable platform to reward the following learners with outstanding performances in the following categories:
- Environmental Campaigners: Jacome Pretorius and Johanna Rein
- Wetland Workers: Greg Mandl and Francis Hage
- Landmark Trust Leopard Monitor Awards: Byron Raymer, Niel du Toit, Jared Prinsloo, Robert Hill and Zandri Sheperd
- Full Colours for Environment: Niel du Toit, Bryon Raymer, Bronwyn Dumbleton, Julius Stopforth
