GEORGE NEWS - Fresh innovations in the field of science and technology, produced by young minds from our region, are on the cards this weekend.
The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists aims to inspire the youth and afford them the opportunity to meet other like-minded learners, share ideas and interact with experts in the field.
A total of 87 projects by 141 learners will be open for public viewing on Saturday 3 August, from 14:00 to 14:30 (sic) at the George Civic Centre.
In George, five schools are competing in 13 different categories, including agricultural, animal, biomedical and medical sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, earth sciences, energy and engineering.
Learners from Grade 6 to 12 can enter this competition, run annually by Eskom.
The projects will be evaluated by 40 judges from across the Eden / Karoo district and they will give their input. Representatives of Wessa, the Western Cape Department of Education, Nelson Mandela University and the Garden Route Botanical Garden are among the list of guests who will attend the prize-giving ceremony which is held later on Saturday afternoon.
Winners of the regional competition will be invited to the International Science Expo in Johannesburg which will take place in September. Sonet Strydom, the Eden / Karoo administrator of the competition, encourages the public to come and view the learners' projects on Saturday afternoon and to get involved in the initiative.
