GEORGE NEWS - A community hack event will be held at the Old Cattle Dip, a historic site in Whites Road (erf 223), Wilderness Heights this coming Saturday, 10 March, from 09:00 till 13:00.
It is presented by the Touw River Conservancy and partners.
Volunteers who would like to take part should bring closed shoes, long pants, gloves, water, sun protection, hazard glasses, tools for clearing alien vegetation (tree poppers, hand saws, sprayers, pangas, spades, etc), and ingredients for a bring and braai.
Matthew Koehorst, a conservancy member, invites everyone to join in this community event.
"We must start taking the clearing of invasive alien plants in public spaces into our own hands.
"The half-day event will focus on doing some follow-up clearing at the Old Cattle Dip. Bring tools, enthusiasm and friends and let's get stuck into being land stewards for our area.
"Management of invasive alien plants can be an overwhelming and daunting task, but if we band together and work as a community, we can be much more effective, and have some fun at the same time."
Koehorst said they will be sharing techniques and methods for clearing wattle, bramble, lantana, blue gum and other invasive species and will end off the event with a bring and braai nearby.
