GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route is participating again in the Great Southern BioBlitz (GSB) and more active participants are needed to record the region's biodiversity on iNaturalist.
Residents are encouraged to register on the website www.inaturalist.org for free membership and participation from Friday 28 October until the end of Monday 31 October.
The GSB is an international period of intense biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species across the Southern Hemisphere in Spring.
The purpose of this event is to highlight both the immense biodiversity spread across the Southern Hemisphere in the flourishing springtime, as well as to engage the greater public in science and nature learning.
"By the end of October, the natural world is on full throttle. Flowers are blooming, insects are emerging, birds are singing, and reptiles are coming out of their winter hibernation. It makes sense for residents to observe life at this time of year," says Christine Ridge-Schnaufer, honorary secretary of Wessa Eden, one of the organisations that are supporting the event. She is encouraging Georgians to take the time to join in this great effort.
For more information on how to get involved, e-mail Wessa Eden at wessageorge@isat.co.za or phone them on 044 873 4203.
Participants in the BioBlitz must look out for the various fauna and flora species in their area. The lovely gladiolus floribundus is found in the Western and Eastern Cape. Photo sourced on iNaturalist by Colin Ralston and Christine Ridge-Schnaufer.
