GEORGE NEWS - Case Rijsdijk will deliver the sixth and final lecture in the series 'Astronomy for the curious person' on Friday 8 June.
It is entitled 'How do we know what we know - fingerprinting the universe?'.
With the rapid advancement of technology the rate of collecting data has increased enormously, and managing this has become a science in its own right. In addition with modern computer technology, it is now possible to 'model' or 'simulate' very complex systems. Briefly, Rijsdijk will look at the tools used and how astronomy today is not restricted to astronomers, but involves a very wide range of scientists, from particle physicists to statisticians, mathematicians and cosmologists, who use 'telescopes' that certainly don't look like telescopes.
And then we have many telescopes and space probes giving a really good picture of what goes on out there and why.
The lecture starts at 10:30 and all members (at R5) and visitors (at R10) are most welcome.
