GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - While for many of us the lockdown is not much more than a big irritation, for animal welfare organisations in George the battle with sick, neglected and starving cats and dogs is very real.
On Thursday 14 May, journalist Kristy Kolberg joined local animal welfare organisation, Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need (Odin), during an outreach in Golden Valley, an informal settlement in Blanco, George.
According to Odin chairperson Colleen Smith, they dewormed about 40 dogs and treated about 30 puppies against ticks, fleas and worms. Many animals also received their first meal in days.
Regular outreaches are done at informal settlements in George and Oudtshoorn, and according to Smith, these visits have not and will not decrease during the lockdown.

"The animals need us now more than ever. We are pro life and believe that every animal deserves the right to life and a second chance to happiness. We believe in educating pet owners in getting the yard dog healthy and discourage the need for constant breeding. During these outreaches we try to teach empathy and focus on removing animals on chains or those who are bound to cages or crates," said Smith.

Being an NPO and battling the constant increase of animals in need, the need of pet food and treatment, building material to expand their kennels and funding to pay their vet bills and keep them going, Odin will be very glad for any form of donation from the public.
For more information about helping Odin, its staff and the animals they take into their care, Smith can be contacted on 072 084 1374.
