GEORGE NEWS - A number of ANC supporters and members gathered at the Imizamo Yethu high school hall to celebrate Freedom Day on Friday 27 April.
Freedom Day in South Africa is a public holiday which marks the birth of democracy in the country. The day commemorates the first democratic elections on 27 April 1994.
South Africa celebrates Freedom Day to mark the liberation of its people from a long period of colonialism and apartheid.
Apartheid was officially instituted in South Africa in 1948, but colonialism and oppression of the African majority had plagued South Africa since 1652. After decades of resistance, an agreement between the liberation movement and the apartheid government was reached in 1988.
Singing made up part of the celebrations.
This year's celebrations coincide with the birthday centenaries of the late first black president of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Albertina Sisulu, a heroine of the liberation struggle.
The theme for the 2018 Freedom Month celebrations was "The Year of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: United for Radical Economic Transformation".
