GEORGE NEWS - Fire chief sustain broken ribs in accident
On-duty Eden Deputy Fire Chief, Deon van Wyk, came off lightly when the vehicle he was driving overturned in the Outeniqua Pass on Sunday 5 November.
He was on his way to a fire in the Kubuku and De Vlugt areas when the accident occurred.
The accident happened at 14:15 and as soon as Georgians heard the news, social media was flooded with messages of support for the highly respected fire chief.
Van Wyk, who was travelling alone, allegedly lost control of the vehicle and it overturned and rolled on a bend.
He broke a few ribs and was taken to the Mediclinic George in a stable condition.
He was discharged from hospital on Tuesday.
"We are very sorry about the accident, but grateful that he [Van Wyk] was not seriously injured. He is one of our best and we are very proud of the way he and all the other firefighters have been battling the recent fires in Eden," said Eden DM's executive manager of Management Services, Clive Africa.
Drunk driver six times over the limit
This weekend's drunkest driver on Western Cape roads was caught in the George service area. He was six times over the legal limit with 1,47 mg of alcohol/1000 ml of breath. The legal limit is 0,24 mg.
Out of the 15 motorists arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, six were arrested in the Southern Cape - three in George, two in Mossel Bay and one in Knysna.
In addition to this, traffic officers arrested one person in Oudtshoorn for false documentation and one on the N2 near Mossel Bay for the possession of dagga.
Breath testing was performed on 2 378 drivers at 23 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape.
A total of 156 speeding offences were recorded and 325 fines in the total amount of R459 200 were issued for a variety of reasons, ranging from driver offences to vehicle fitness violations.
