TRAFFIC NEWS - The Western Cape Government launched its 2024 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign last week with Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, saying road safety is everyone's responsibility.
"By resting regularly, not speeding, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and showing respect towards each other, road users can reduce incidents on the roads," he said.
Over the 2023/24 festive season 164 people were killed on the Western Cape's roads. Most of these deaths, about two thirds, occurred on municipal roads.
Last year the provincial traffic officers stopped and checked 271 698 vehicles, issued almost 90 000 fines, made 576 arrests for drunk driving and 64 arrests for reckless and negligent driving and removed approximately 1 000 unroadworthy vehicles from the roads.
The department is once again planning daily 24/7 traffic operations across the province this season.
Key focus areas include targeting:
• Driving under the influence
• Speeding
• Seatbelt compliance
• Overloading
• Fatigue management
• Visibility and distracted driving
• Jaywalking and pedestrian safety
Nearly 600 officers deployed
A total of 594 provincial traffic officers will be deployed to monitor roads and enforce these measures, supported by 296 patrol vehicles and 6 motorcycles to ensure a consistent presence on key provincial routes.
The launch event featured representatives from essential partners, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Golden Arrow Bus Services, West Coast District Disaster Management, Emergency Medical Services, and Santaco.
Everyone emphasised their commitment to a collaborative approach to making roads safer.
