GARDEN ROUTE NEWS – SANParks rangers have arrested 10 suspects involved in abalone poaching during an anti-poaching operation near Nature's Valley.
The arrests were made in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park on Sunday 13 October.
According to SANParks head of communication JP Louw, the rangers acted on information received from Southern Cape Operation Phakisa the day before and conducted a patrol along Forest Hall Road.
"Rangers observed a suspicious vehicle in the area, and upon approaching, the individuals fled, leaving behind two bags which were later confirmed to contain abalone," says Louw.
Following the discovery, rangers notified the police and a thorough search of the surrounding area resulted in the apprehension of 10 suspects. One managed to escape.
Authorities seized 315 units of abalone weighing 48.16kg, with an estimated value of R89 998.
"This marks the second successful abalone poaching arrest in the area this year, following an arrest in April involving a suspect from Jeffreys Bay," says Louw.
The suspects are detained by the police.
This operation highlights the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in protecting South Africa's marine resources.
SANParks congratulates the rangers, Southern Cape Operation Phakisa, the police, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE Knysna and Mossel Bay), the Crime Prevention Unit, Plett Security and all stakeholders involved in this successful operation.
