GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality has apologised for inconsistent refuse collection in the Hoekwil area, saying that it faces operational challenges that affect service delivery.
Sivuyile Mtila, senior manager of environmental services, offered an apology in response to a complaint about refuse that is sometimes collected days late in certain parts of the village.
A concerned resident, who wants to remain anonymous, complained to the newspaper that in the Bosbok Road area the non-collection of refuse is a regular occurrence, but residents' complaints fall on deaf ears.
"My concern is that regular delays in refuse collection make for bad habits in wild animals such as baboons to scratch in the bags.
"This does not contribute positively to living in harmony with nature and can lead to conflict, and eventually the blame is on the animals again."
Mtila said that there have been service interruptions caused by operational issues, but these issues are now being prioritised.
"Additionally, the recent non-collection was due to changes implemented in the Wilderness area and breakages of municipal vehicles. We appreciate the residents' patience and are working diligently to resolve these issues to prevent future delays. The municipality continues to strive to provide better service to all its citizens."
• Since George Herald's enquiry to the municipality, the complainant informed the newspaper that there has been an immediate improvement. "Miracles still happen. After failing to collect refuse for three days last week [Wednesday 31 July], in Blompot, the refuse was not only collected on the right day but also collected before noon."
