Many authorities consider film music to be the 'classical' or serious music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Composers such as John Williams (Star Wars, Jaws), Henry Mancini (Moon River, Pink Panther Theme) and Richard Rodgers (Sound of Music) have all left their mark on our collective musical consciousness.
The music of these three composers will feature in the two concerts to be presented by the Carpe Musicam! Orchestra and Choir on 4 and 5 August in St Mark's Cathedral.
Aptly entitled Magical Movie Melodies, these shows will explore some of the more popular music of this genre.
This sets the scene for an innovative and exciting programme designed to entertain and enthrall Georgian music lovers.
All the items on the programme, except one which was merely used in a David Lean production, were specifically written for either stage or screen. Those written specifically for stage were later adapted as film themes and those are the versions with which most Georgians will identify.
Andrew Lloyd-Webber's All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera will give soloist Ninette Smit a vehicle for her gentle, soulful voice.
The Carpe Musicam! Choir will join the orchestra for selections from South Pacific and Les Miserables. Both selections will be premiered at the concerts, having been arranged specifically for the orchestra and choir.
The music of John Williams features in four items on the programme.
One of them will feature Jeanette van As and Bianca van Zyl with their violin and cello duet version of the main theme from Schindler's List.
There are many more intriguing musical treats in store for the audience in this exciting collaboration between the musical skills of the orchestra, choir and soloist and facilitation by the Friends of the Cathedral.
