GEORGE NEWS - Residents who complain there's nothing to do in George can look forward to a string of concerts by international and local musicians this year.
The George Music Society has arranged a programme with seven live performances by the country's top musicians.
World class concerts
Culture vultures may not have noticed, but George is on the major tour route between Pretoria and Cape Town and outstanding artists (both classical musicians and pop artists) regularly do a tour stop-over in this beautiful area.
However, Georgians should make it worth their while to come here and give world-class performances.
On many occasions, the society's shows in the George Arts Theatre were only half full. It is a pity that Georgians miss out on these great opportunities, and it's a let-down for the artists who are used to giving concerts in the most famous concert halls of Europe and the rest of the world.
The George Herald, therefore, wants to give timely information to allow for pre-bookings to be done on the internet.
As mentioned in last week's issue, popular Belgian musicians Nikolaas Kende (piano) and Jolente De Mayer (violin, hailing from Antwerp in Belgium) will kick off the year on Friday 2 February at the Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre.
Classic guitarists
The world-renowned classical guitarists James Grace and Morgan Szymanski will be next, performing on Thursday 15 March at the Arts Theatre. Mexican-born Morgan Szymanski shares the stage with British-born South African-based guitarist James Grace.
Grace is a graduate of the Royal College of Music in London, and was the first guitarist in the history of the college to receive the Tagore Gold Medal. Szymanski has been highlighted as 'one to watch' by the magazines Gramophone and BBC Music.
Born in Mexico City in 1979, he started playing guitar at the age of six. Early studies at the National Music School (Mexico) and the Edinburgh Music School led to a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he graduated in 2004 with first class honours.
Trio
The Hungarian Trio will perform at the Arts Theatre on Friday 11 May.
