SWIMMING NEWS - The Royal Swimming Academy open water relay team set a new local record by becoming the first team in the region to win medals in an open water relay event.
Of the ten competing teams, Marnus Kotzé, Sergio dos Santos, Hannah Murray and Tammy Greenwood swam their way to bronze medals in the 4x1,25km relay in a time of 1:09:59 at the recent Eastern Cape Open Water Championships held at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay.
The RSA team finished just behind the silver medal winners, Best Aquatics (1:09:07), and only three minutes behind the gold medal winners, Infinity Gold (1:06:51). Both teams are from Eastern Province Aquatics.
This was truly a memorable win for the these athletes and for as local swimming. Coach Mimette Salter said, "We are thrilled to be the first club in our region to win medals at an open water relay event and we hope that this will inspire more local swimmers to participate in open water swimming. Sergio previously won a relay medal as part of the Western Cape open water relay team and we are thrilled that our club also now has a competitive team."
Established in 2014, the Royal Swimming Academy now has over 160 swimmers from beginner/learn-to swim, through to its very own masters swimmers. With four swim coaches, the club continues to grow from strength to strength and has swimmers competing regionally, nationally and internationally.
