SAILING NEWS - Racing on Sunday for George Lakes Yacht Club was for the 2021 President's Trophy. The first races in this series took place on 17 October.
The forecast wind had not appeared during the morning, but it started filling in from the south-west by the time the first race began. The velocity increased during this race, but decreased during race 2, with gusts over 20 knots. Race 3 was in about 12 knots, with a direction change to west. There was a fleet of thirteen boats sailing, comprising Dabchick, Laser and GP14.
Jordyn Soldin had the intial lead in race 1 on her Dabchick, with Malcolm Osborne and Kyle Koeries (Laser) in pursuit. Soldin held the lead around the first triangle, but relinquished this as a result of a capsize after rounding mark one for the second time. Then Osborne capsized at mark 2 to give the lead to Kyle Koeries.
He was able to take line honours in this race, ahead of the Dabchicks of Matthew de Villiers and Jordyn Soldin.
In the strong wind of race two, Luke de Villiers (Dabchick) extended a lead ahead of the fleet, followed by Soldin and Koeries.
In the third race, it was Soldin and Osborne leading the fleet around the first triangle. The wind changing to the west enabled Osborne to take the lead and Soldin was also passed by the Laser 4.7s of Kyle Koeries and Ashley Layland.
On class handicap ratings, Kyle Koeries was the winner of all three of the day's races.
However, he did not compete in the first three races of this series.
Henry Paine won all three races last time, but only sailed one race on this day.
The series winner for the President's Trophy is Malcolm Osborne.
