GEORGE NEWS - With fourteen boats on the water, George Lake Yacht Club had its best attendance for some time for its sailing on Sunday.
With wind conditions good all three scheduled races could be completed.
In race one the Fireball of Georgou Divaris and Ferdinand Holm took the lead from the start, pursued by the similar boat of David and Mandy Laing, who were hampered by lack of practice as a team compared to the slick leaders.
In the Lasers, Charles Norman had the lead for half the race, with Malcolm Osborne in close pursuit. Osborne took the lead, then Norman had a catastrophic breakage when his mast step broke and the falling mast cracked the deck. Henry Paine passed up the next beat to take the lead to the end of the race, ahead of Osborne and Maurits Lammers.
In race two the Divaris / Holm Fireball extended a big lead over the whole fleet, finishing over two minutes ahead of the Dart and over three minutes ahead of the other Fireball. In the Lasers Henry Paine had the lead, closely pursued by Osborne. Maurits Lammers was the third finisher, after recovering from a capsize.
In the third race, there was only one Fireball sailing - that of Divaris / Holm - once again sailing an impeccable race and again two minutes ahead of the Delport Dart 18. Just two Lasers sailed race three - Henry Paine had a comfortable lead ahead of Osborne.
The start of the second race with the Fireball of David Laing (right) ahead, followed by the Lasers of Maurits Lammers and Malcolm Osborne, with the Dart of Hans Delport in the background.
The Optimists were putting in good practice during their racing for the upcoming Youth National Championships, to be held on Vaal Dam in December. Conrad Holm was the winner of all three races.
