SPORT NEWS - With the Springboks having completed their end of season tour in November and with the Carling Currie Cup only starting in mid January 2022, South African Rugby fans will have to look to Europe for rugby action where there will be a few South African faces featuring. For the cricket fans there is India's tour of South Africa for some local action to look forward to this December.
The European Champions Cup 2nd round kicks off this weekend with Montpellier taking on Leinster and Ulster taking on Northampton Saints on Friday.
Ulster can feel boosted by new signing South African Duane Vermeulen who made a decent debut fresh out of Covid-19 quarantine against ASM Clermont Auvergne last week.
Northahampton will be wary considering their opening day defeat against Racing 92. Ulster are however favourites with 1.09 odds of winning to Northampton 6.60. Racing 92 take on Ospreys on Saturday, with Racing looking to add to their opening win against Northampton and Ospreys looking to bounce back from defeat against Sale. Racing are the favourites to win this one at 1.01. Sale, with Lood De Jager in their line-up will look to continue with their winning ways against ASM Clermont Auvergne, who lost their opening tie to Ulster but Sales are the odds on favourite to win this win at 1.26.
The rest of Saturday's games will see Bath take on La Rochelle, Glasgow Warriors vs Exeter Chiefs. The pool B games are Harlequins vs Cardiff Rugby and Munster vs Casters. The rest of pool B’s games will take place on Sunday.
There is also the European leg of the United Rugby Championship coming up on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, with the South African only franchises pencilled in to compete in February, but with the UK Government abandoning their controversial red list, this may soon change.
For the cricket fans, the anxiety of nearly missing out on the India Tour has seen a compromise shorter series take place. Three Test matches and three ODI’s have been scheduled with the T20 series pushed back further into 2022. The first test will start on Boxing Day for the most ardent of cricket fans. India will be missing power hitter Rohit Sharma who pulled out of the tour due to injury but this will not sway them from trying to win a first Test series on South African soil in their history.
South Africa have introduced a few new faces into their team with Duanne Olivier returning into the fold after Kolpak registrations were cancelled, and familiar faces on either side like Quinton De Kock, Kagiso Rabada for South Africa and Viraht Kohli for India it will be well worth the delay.
