GEORGE NEWS - Eden Ladies bowlers played brilliantly at the SA Bowling Masters, the most prestigious annual tournament in South Africa, taking one bronze and two gold medals.
Colleen Piketh (George Bowling Club) walked away as the Ladies Open Masters champion.
She beat Esme Hayley (Linden Bowling Club) 21-15 after the score stood at 13-13 at the 15th end. Piketh had to dig deep a few times to keep Hayley off the scoreboard in the game that stretched over 23 ends.
Sixteen of the top women bowlers in South Africa competed in the open divisions in two sections of eight each.
Nan Roos (Hartenbos Bowling Club) walked away with the bronze medal in the Veteran Ladies section.
In the Junior Ladies division, Carmen Fourie of Wingate Park almost triumphed on her home soil, but Gillian Young (Outeniqua Bowling Club), who currently plays for the Western Province, would not allow it. Gillian won the nail-biting match 21-20 after playing 27 ends, to be crowned as the Ladies Junior Masters champion.
Twelve of the leading players in South Africa competed in the division for veterans and juniors (under 30) men and women.
The Masters, one of the highlights on the South African bowling calendar, stretched over three days and the rainy weather of Friday and Saturday made interesting demands on the players.
