Cape Metropole ropes in their opposition

GEORGE NEWS - The South African National Tug-of-War Championship was held at the George Showgrounds last weekend.

A total of 691 athletes from 116 teams representing the districts Eden, Cape Metropole, Gauteng North, Overberg and Cape Winelands, took part in the competition. Cape Metropole, with a total of 59 points, won the championships. Their closest competitor, Cape Winelands, finished 11 points behind them.

Vice-president of the South African Tug-of-War Federation, Anton Botha, said he was very impressed with the high standard of tug-of-war that was displayed. "This bodes well for the World Championship in eight weeks' time in Cape Town. Of specific significance was the excellent spirit in which the different teams competed in this tournament. The excitement was tangible."

The official national teams were also announced. These teams will be representing South Africa at the World Tug-of-War Championship, which will be held from 19 to 22 September at the Camps Bay High School in Cape Town.
